Northern Delaware
Delaware Sharks Field Hockey Club
Delaware Sharks offers both recreational and travel field hockey programming.
The club’s recreational program is run in partnership with Kirkwood Sports and currently includes several levels, beginning with Baby Sharks for ages 3–5 and progressing through programs for elementary and middle-school players.
Delaware Sharks also offers travel opportunities, indoor travel, spring play, camps and other seasonal programming.
Area: Northern Delaware

Empower Field Hockey — Newark
Empower Field Hockey is based in the Newark area and was founded in 2019.
Its primary practice location is the University of Delaware’s Fred P. Rullo Stadium in Newark, although Empower states that it also uses other locations in and around Newark.
Empower currently offers development programs for youth ages 6–12 and competitive programming for players ages 10–19.
Its competitive club structure includes U12, U14, U16 and U19 opportunities, with tryouts or evaluations used for competitive team selection.

Southern Delaware
Delaware Shore Field Hockey — Georgetown
Delaware Shore Field Hockey provides youth field hockey programming at Sussex Academy’s Secondary Campus in Georgetown.
The organization currently lists fall Skills & Drills, a winter indoor league and a summer league.
Its normal annual cycle begins with fall training for players from kindergarten through junior varsity, followed by winter indoor competition and summer league play.
Delaware Shore’s organizational information also lists elementary training, winter indoor leagues, summer leagues and summer skills training.
Area: Georgetown / Sussex County
Programs: Skills training, indoor league and summer league
Youth opportunities: Kindergarten-age players through older youth players, depending on the program

Shore Byrds Field Hockey — Delmar
Shore Byrds Field Hockey is based in Delmar, Delaware, and serves players on the Eastern Shore.
The club says it provides opportunities for girls ages 5 and older. Its programming includes winter travel indoor competition, outdoor tournaments, summer training opportunities and clinics.
Shore Byrds specifically describes its mission as providing additional opportunities for players from the Eastern Shore of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
The club was founded in 2010 and lists a Delmar, Delaware address.
Area: Delmar / Southern Delaware / Eastern Shore
Programs: Indoor travel, outdoor tournaments, summer training and clinics

A Useful Statewide Resource
Delaware Field Hockey Association
The Delaware Field Hockey Association is primarily an adult recreational field hockey organization, so we are not listing it as a youth club.
It is useful to families, however, because DFHA maintains a Delaware field hockey directory covering youth clubs, leagues, school field hockey and other opportunities around the state.
Its current directory identifies youth opportunities in Northern, Central and Southern Delaware and specifically directs families to organizations including Delaware Sharks, Empower Field Hockey and other regional programs.

How Should Delaware Parents Choose a Field Hockey Program?
Start with geography.
Delaware is small, but repeatedly driving from one end of the state to the other for practices can still become a significant commitment.
Once you’ve identified programs within a reasonable distance, contact the organization directly and ask about:
- Your player’s age and experience level
- Beginner or recreational opportunities
- Club and travel teams
- Practice locations
- Practice frequency
- Tryouts or evaluations
- Tournament commitments
- Travel expectations
- Current registration fees
- Equipment requirements
A young child trying field hockey for the first time doesn’t necessarily need the same environment as an experienced high-school player preparing for competitive club tournaments.
Find the program that fits the player first.
Field Hockey Beyond the Club Level in Delaware
Field hockey also has an established presence in Delaware schools.
The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association administers high-school field hockey and publishes current field hockey policies, rules information and championship resources. Its field hockey resources were updated for the 2026 season.
The University of Delaware also competes in NCAA Division I field hockey at Fred P. Rullo Stadium in Newark. Its 2026 schedule includes 10 home games.
For a young Delaware player, that means there are opportunities to see the sport played beyond the youth level without leaving the state.

Parents don’t need to map out a child’s entire field hockey future before the first practice.
Find a legitimate program nearby.
Let her learn.
Let her play.
Then see where the game takes her.
